South Africans may not be the best football players but they surely can sing and dance. I watch TV reports about South African workers on strike, with amusement. Labourers who have dropped their tools to make a point often sing and dance as part of their protest marches. Many of the songs might be “war songs” but the mere fact that music is involved, thrills me. This is unlike another African country that I know, where any form of “strike” is usually accompanied by violence and destruction.

So South Africa crashed out early from the World Cup? So what?

Several months before the first whistle was blown to commence the first match in the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup, the official South African tourism board had released a TV commercial on some international channels all geared towards attracting the world to the warmth and excitement that can be experienced in South Africa. As usual, music and dance was the key tool. Enter Diski. “Diski” is a local slang South Africa for the game of football.

The Diski dance is a dance which is comprised of a series of choreographed football moves, named from different parts of the country, and was created for the 2010 FIFA World Cup as part of its advertising campaign. The moves are named in Tswana, Zulu, Sotho and English amongst others and include “Tsamaya”, “Heel Extension Mkhari” and “Chester”. The adverts were shown on CNN, BBC, Eurosport and SkySports amongst others. The motivation of the advert was to give soccer fans “a chance to learn the moves and “feel the rhythm of African football”".

The Internet has plenty of Diski dance videos to offer, but I am sharing a carefully selected few with you. Enjoy!

I love music. Melodious music. One of such is Ofori Amponsah‘s “Sampson & Delilah”. The track features Ghanaian rapper “Voltage” and is basically about Delilah’s deception of her lover. The storyline is similar to that of the one in the Holy Bible.

What do I like about this track? It’s so easy to listen & dance to, the right mix of African drums as well as the nice rhythm created by the bass guitar. . Just make sure you’re not listening whilst driving so you don’t over-accelerate or lift your hands off the steering-wheel out of excitement.

There is a movie to this song. I am yet to watch it. I will share my views about that movie whenever I am chanced to watch it.

Ofori Amponsah once again proves he’s got vibe. Enjoy the embedded video below… and share your thoughts about Ghanaian hiplife music as well.

My attention was drawn to the following story, on 6th November 2008:

On the third of November 2008 on Muhri Okunola Street, Victoria Island Lagos, the traffic was chaotic. A young lady (Uzoma Okere) driving home from work didn’t move her vehicle out of the way of a military convoy on time, resulting severe beatings by armed Nigerian Navy men. The convoy consisted of Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade’s personal Navy saloon car and his pilot truck, consisting of 6 armed bodyguards. The body guards in the process physically beat up several Price WaterHouse Coopers staff and destroyed cameras that were filming the event as it unfolded. The video clip was recorded from the PricewaterHouseCoopers office on a personal camera.

This is the lady’s side of the story, as reported by PM News:

She said the officers had asked her to stop since their boss was on the same road. ”I tried to move my car to the left side of the road but before I knew what was happening, one of them came out of a car in the convoy of the naval officer and whipped me while I was still seated in my car.

“I came out and I held on to the whip. Four other ratings rushed at me, held my hands and tried to put a handcuff on me. “One of them tore my shirt. I tried to adjust it and get back into the car but they whipped me,” she narrated, adding that a man who tried to challenge them, was hit on the head with the butt of a gun.

“They dragged out the other ladies in my car, both of them were pregnant women and beat them up. “While all this was going on, they pulled me into the compound where the Rear Admiral had driven into and I was screaming for someone to call my dad. One of my colleagues got the phone and called my father,” she said.

Professor Wole Soyinka was reported as saying:

“This abominable kind of conduct has got to stop. This animal conduct on the part of our uniformed services must end.”

ThisDay reports that President Umaru Yar’Adua (who preaches about the rule of law) has ordered that the Navy investigates the matter.

There is video evidence that should be admitted in court (or military tribunal). The men must all be sacked from the Navy and they must face justice. Shame on any man/woman who abuses their authority!
