His blog(s) ain't that pleasing and are actually plain but the amount of commentators, linkbacks and feed subscribers he's amassed is simply AMAZING! Linking out to blogs of high authority works well. IMO it shows you know quality content and that you're primed towards delivering nothing but quality content. As you rightly said, some wil link back and some won't, so don't sweat it. Just keep giving from the bottom of your heart and some day, you'll receive.
