A religious individual would ask me, why are you banking on a human being, why not put all your hope and trust in the God the Almighty Creator? I’d say to the fellow, “I trust and believe in God with all my heart, and all my soul; but I know God uses human beings to manifest His good works on mankind”.
It is on this basis that I am stating here and now that I am not only convinced, but I am banking some hope on Nigeria’s new President – Musa Yar Adua. I believe the humble man will play his part, and leave Nigeria much better than it was, before he took office.
Why?
- He is not arrogant and bullish like his immediate predecessor (President Olusegun Obasanjo). I believe he would be cool-headed enough to listen to sound advice and not be an authoritarian.
- He is well-educated and does not have to struggle to impress. His education will also bring to bear on his analysis and decision-making.
- He is humble. Humble enough to offer an all-inclusive government by inviting some members of the opposition parties to his government.
What about experience? He has worked in the corporate sector in various leading capacities of over 20 years. That is aside his teaching career.
Never mind if his nomination and election to the Office of the President of Nigeria was rocky and controversial.
I am much impressed by the following statement, attributed to the President whilst he was swearing-in members of his new cabinet yesterday. Emphasis mine.
He charged the ministers to remember that “we have been given this opportunity not because we are better than other Nigerians but because Providence has seen fit to thrust the responsibility of guiding our nation’s ship of state on us today. We are faced with the stark choice of using this once-in-a-lifetime chance to do good: let us, as a team, resolve to do our utmost for the good of Nigeria. We must pray for God’s guidance to enable us function as Servant-Leaders and not Ruling-elites.”
The President also advised that “let no one be in doubt: the comprehensive reform process is on course and we shall stay the course until we reach the ultimate goal of a strong, secure, peaceful, progressive and prosperous nation. Our seven-point agenda, which you will all be expected to drive faithfully, is a logical practical extension of the reform process. I am confident that success is assured if we all commit to work for our nation’s growth and development honestly, sincerely, diligently, and with the absolute fear of God.”

I share the same belief with you, afterall President Yaradua happens to be the only public office holder to have declared his asset twice in a role while in oofice as governor(something the EFCC chairman, Mallam Nuhu Rbadu and the immediate past President Olusegun Obasanjo did not and could not do.)
