The World Wide Web can be mischievously called the Wild Wild Web. And why not? The risks associated with surfing the WWW are innumerable. Virus, trojan horses, spy ware, spam, hacking, fraud, name them.
One that seems to stick with South Africa is online fraud. Hacking into user’s bank accounts is widespread and so one would expect that folks would be sceptical about online shopping. Surprisingly, that is not the case.
In a bid to encourage marketers to embrace e-commerce without fear of risks, Gino Cosme of Cosmedia minces no words: “South African marketers need to take more risks online”
While relating to Seth’s blog about taking risks, he continues:
Aside from being quite ineffective in terms of measurability and forming relationships, putting up billboards, airing radio ads, and launching TV commercials is old hat. However, riding the new media current means being in a position to reap many remarkable rewards.
It’s time to start taking these risks. The industry and community is waiting.
I guess that’s true. Just today, a leading South African news website news24.com published a success story of bidorbuy.co.za in SA shoppers ’splurge online’
Despite perceptions that the internet is an unsafe place to shop as fraudsters try their luck, online marketplace bidorbuy.co.za reports that SA consumers are happier than ever before to shop online for high-value goods.
The company said turnover for March 2007 came in at R6.2m – an all-time high for the company – even pipping the performance over the lucrative December holiday period.
